SKUAST-K holds special lecture series on geo-informatics

Srinagar: Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir held an expert lecture series on ‘Geo-informatics: A Perspective in Forestry and Environmental Studies at the Benihama campus.
The university’s Division of Natural Resource Management (NRM), Faculty of Forestry, organised the lecture series under the World Bank-ICAR funded National Agricultural Higher Education Project (NAHEP) in collaboration with Erasmus+ sponsored URGENT Project.
Prof PK Joshi from the School of Environmental Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, was the invited speaker during the program. The lectures delivered were based on different sub-themes including remote sensing and GIS essentials, multi-sensor and multi-satellite technology, and applications in forestry and environmental fields. Prof Joshi is renowned in the field of remote sensing and GIS. He has held positions of eminence including Chairman Special Centre for Disaster Research, Head, Division of NRM-TERI University, and Scientist at Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) besides being a fellow of several reputed organizations at International and National level. He has also served as visiting professor at prestigious universities abroad including University Freiburg Germany, Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies USA and University of Helsinki.
In the series of talks, Prof Joshi discussed various satellite and sensor characteristics and different software platforms for remote sensing and GIS processing. He further gave a recent overview of satellite data applications in forestry and environmental sciences.
Prof SA Gangoo, Dean Faculty of Forestry welcomed the speaker and emphasized upon importance of remote sensing as one of the emerging sciences.
Organizing Secretary of the program, Prof Akhlaq Amin Wani, informed about the eminence of the speaker in the field and gave technical insights into the program.
Dr Aasif Ali Gatoo initially welcomed the guest and presented a formal vote of thanks.
Prof MA Islam, Dr Khursheed Ahmad Sofi, Dr Shah Murtaza, Dr Shiba Zahoor, Dr Basira Mehraj, Dr Azeem Raja and Raqib Majeed Wani were among others who attended the program.
