Legal Metrology Deptt organizes two-day seminar at Bemina

Srinagar: Legal Metrology Department J&K successfully organised a two-day seminar at Legal Metrology Complex Bemina during which the officials of Legal Metrology Department were apprised about the various consumer oriented legislations.
The seminar was inaugurated by Controller LMD J&K, Majid K. A. Drabu who enjoined upon all the officials of LMD to enhance their level of wisdom in view of the changing trends in consumerism.
The thread bare discussions were held on the recent amendments under which the online shopping platforms like Amazon were brought under the ambit of Legal Metrology Act 2009.
It was emphasised that the various e-commerce portals need to disclose the details of the products like complete manufacturing address, Country of Origin, Date of Packing, Customer Care details etc. in pursuance to the recent amendments and the methods for enforcement of such provisions were thoroughly highlighted during the programme.
Speaking on the Occasion, Drabu stressed upon the Legal Metrology Officials to enforce the Legal Metrology provisions in letter and spirit and expedite the process of service delivery in a time bound manner.
In a first-of-its-kind initiative, field units of the department were specially trained with respect to the model approvals, Government approved test centres, Numeration rules besides the various other provisions.
The speakers, while highlighting the importance of consumer rights, stressed upon the Legal Metrology Officials to apply their judicious mind in the larger interest of Consumers while enforcing the consumer welfare measures.
The speakers also highlighted the newly evolved ways of verification of Weights & Measuring instruments in order to ensure their accuracy.
It is pertinent to mention that the Legal Metrology Department has completely shifted its services through online mode only and the various technical procedure involved in this was simplified by way of this training programme.
The officers practically demonstrated the aspects pertaining to Legal Metrology in protecting rights as consumers.
The demonstrations included awareness about declarations on packaged commodities, safety measures, warranty, potency, purity which are required to be looked upon by officials on all the goods including electronic products, packaged commodities, Fast Moving Consumer Goods, LPG cylinders etc. before purchase.
Besides this, demonstrations were given about net content checking in Packaged goods, LPG cylinders, measurement of delivery from the petrol pumps etc.
