Over 10,000 encounters in UP in six years under Yogi govt

Lucknow: More than 10,000 police encounters of criminals have taken place in Uttar Pradesh during the last six years of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath-led BJP Government in the state.

In terms of the number of encounters, Meerut topped the list of the districts of the state with the highest number of 3,152 encounters that have taken place since 2017, in which 63 people were killed and 1,708 were injured.

In these police encounters, a policeman lost his life while 401 other cops were injured. A total of 5,967 criminals were nabbed in the action of the UP Police.

As soon as Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took over the reign of the state, the government intensified crackdown on criminal elements and mafia in pursuant to what it called as zero-tolerance policy towards such elements to strengthen the state’s law and order.

As per statistics, more than 10,000 encounters have taken place in the state in the six-year long crackdown on criminals.

Due to the action of the police, the state, which was once known for poor law and order situation and atrocities of mafias on innocent people, today is considered a crime-free state not only in the country but also abroad.

It is noteworthy here that during GIS-23, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and other senior leaders and investors praised the law and order situation in the state. The UP Police worked in a planned manner to check crime and the crackdown on criminals and encounters were part of its strategy that instilled fear in the criminals, so much so that these antisocial elements started fleeing the state.

In all, the UP Police have conducted 10,713 encounters since 2017, of which the highest of 3,152 were conducted by the Meerut Police, followed by the Agra Police, which carried out 1,844 encounters in which 4,654 criminals were arrested while 14 criminals were killed and 55 cops were injured. A total of 1,497 encounters were conducted in Bareilly in which 3,410 criminals were killed and seven arrested. During the encounters in Bareilly, 437 criminals were injured.
