Mirwaiz’s detention a challenge for champions of democracy: Anjuman

Srinagar: Anjuman Auqaf Jama Masjid Srinagar termed it extremely unfortunate that the authorities are prolonging the house imprisonment of its head Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir Dr Moulvi Muhammad Umar Farooq who has been kept under “illegal and arbitrary” detention for the last three and a half years.
The Anjuman in a statement said that due to the continued detention and restrictions, Mirwaiz could not perform the important duty of Friday prayer for the 178th consecutive Jummah, nor could he carry out his official duties of addressing the faithful at the historic Central Jama Masjid Srinagar.
Preventing Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir from performing his peaceful duties towards the people is extremely regrettable and highly condemnable, it said. The Anjuman reminded that not releasing the Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir despite the continuous demand by the people, religious, political & social circles, and civil society, is a tragedy, and also a challenge for the champions of justice and democracy.
