Srinagar: A training programme on ‘Soil Health Management and Soil Health Card Implementation’ was organised for extension personnel and field functionaries at KVK Ganderbal.
The programme was presided over by Dr. Ishfaq Abidi, Sr. Scientist & Head, KVK Ganderbal and was attended by Scientific and Supporting staff of KVK Ganderbal and extension functionaries from line departments of Agriculture/Horticulture/Soil Conservation and Department of Forestry.Dr. Abidi emphasised on Remote Sensing and GIS technologies which will prove beneficial in crop production forecasts, assessment of crop damage, soil moisture estimation and detection of nutrient deficiency in soils. He advocated the use of organic practices particularly compost and manure for enhancing soil fertility and advised the field functionaries to propagate crop rotation, green manuring and biological pest control among the farmers. Dr.Abidi reiterated the mission of KVK for the betterment of farming community of the District in liaison with the line departments. Dr.Mohd Iqbal Bhat, Scientist Soil Science gave a detailed powerpoint presentation on the use of ‘Remote Sensing and GIS in Natural Resource Management’. He thoroughly described the benefits of such technologies and described their application in Agriculture/ Horticulture. Dr Owais Bashir, Project Associate Soil Science gave a powerpoint presentation on ‘Soil Health Management in Organic Way’. He described that sustainable farming practices like organic farming are inevitable for maintaining soil health. Dr.Eajaz Ahmad Dar, Scientist Agronomy described ‘Advances in Soil Health Assessment’. He highlighted the importance of soil health in securing food production and described the various advanced methods for assessment of soil health. The trainees expressed their gratitude for the conduct of such a comprehensive programme. The session ended with formal vote of thanks by Dr.Farooq Ahmad Ahanger Scientist, KVK Ganderbal.
