Modi receives Saffron grown indoors at SKUAST research station Pampore

PAMPORE: Vice Chancellor of the SK University of Agriculture Sciences & Technology (SKUAST) Kashmir. Dr Nazir Ahmad Ganai said that the Saffron flowers gifted to Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently were grown indoors at its Research station for Saffron and Seed Spices at Dusso Pampore.
The Vice Chancellor SKUAST -Kashmir Dr. Nazir Ahmad Ganie told Kashmir Reader that they have a research station for Saffron which is fully dedicated to research on different aspects of our heritage crop, saffron.
Adding that a bouquet of Saffron flowers gifted by LG Manoj Sinha to honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi was grown indoors at the University’s research Station.
The VC also said that after successful indoor cultivation our scientists are looking how to grow the Saffron without soil and they have a collaboration with Westminster University where two of their students will undertake this research.
He told Kashmir Reader that they have also intercropping of Saffron and black cumin-Kala zeera which has benefited the farmers.
He said that Shalimar Saffron 1 variety has already been released by SKUAST-Kashmir.
“We have made variations in this due to which its corm size and quality of Saffron has increased,” he said.
He said that mechanization and automation will attract more farmers towards Saffron cultivation in Pampore.
Recently Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha in his tweet wrote

Sinha also briefed the Prime Minister about J&K’s agriculture and its allied sectors.
