Beti Bachao Beti Padhao: GDC Bandipora organises awareness programme

BANDIPORA: Hassan Shah Khoihami Govt. Degree College Bandipora today conducted an awareness program on “Beti Bachao Beti Padhao” in the auditorium hall of the college.
The program was organized by the Department of Political Science & NSS Unit of the College in which faculty, non-teaching staff, students and NSS Volunteers participated.
The main aim of the program was to raise awareness about the importance of girl child and the need for eradicating gender bias prevalent in society.
A speech competition was held wherein the students from various semesters highlighted the achievements of women in various spheres amid many challenges confronted by them as women in public and domestic life.
The jury consisted of Dr Shaikhul Ashraf, Dr Aashiq Hussain and Professor Manzoor Ahmad Parey.
The jury after evaluating the speeches declared Nahida Amin from 5th semester, the first position holder.
Later an award ceremony was held in which the position holders were felicitated with trophies. On occasion position holders of Painting Competition on the theme “Only One Earth” and Essay Competition on “Beti bachao Beti padhao” conducted earlier were also felicitated.
Speaking on the occasion, the Principal of the college Dr Mohd Amin Malik gave an overview of the campaign “Beti Bachao Beti Padhao” and the dwindling sex ratio in the country caused by gender bias through selective foeticide.
He talked about the patriarchy and different crimes against the women in society and the need to end their ordeal. He emphasized for survival, protection of girl child and efficiency of welfare schemes for fulfilling their education goals.
Dr Rafia, lecturer in environment science, Dr Bilal Ahmed, lecturer English also spoke on the occasion. The proceedings of the event were conducted by Prof Shabeer Ahmad Parey, Department of Political Science. The event concluded with the Vote of Thanks present by Prof Mohammad Abass Bhat, NSS Program Officer (Boys Wing)
