VC SKUAST, Army officials discuss ways to catapult agri sector in Gurez

SRINAGAR: A meeting was conveyed by Vice Chancellor Prof Nazir Ahmad Ganaie and Director Extension SKUAST-Kashmir Prof. Dil Mohammed Makhdoomi with the top army officials in Gurez valley regarding ways to promote agriculture in the area.
SDM Gurez. Dr Mudasir Ahmad Wani, Programme Coordinator Dr Bilal Ahmad Bhat and scientists of the Krishi Vigyan Kendra & Mountain Agriculture Research & Extension Station of Gurez participated besides officers from the Brigade headquarter.
During the meeting some important issues related to the problems of local populace especially during the snow clad season of the Gurez valley when it remains cut off from rest of the world came on to the surface.
Initially in the meeting SDM Gurez Dr Mudasir Ahmad Wani briefed about the launching of KVK facility in Gurez and informed that the transfer of 150 Kanals of land has already been done by the government. In the meeting it was known that we need to change the subsidy concept and bring to the mindset of entrepreneurship, a problem of schooling of children was felt wherein it was seen that majority of the students don’t perform well in the board examination for which the matter has got to be taken with the concerned stakeholders.
Being World Environment Day Major, many environmental issues included the banning of plastic, the disposal of the sewerage & drainage of the hotels and a long term plan for the sustainable waste disposal units at designated places needs to be installed.I n the meeting it was decided that given to the lack of market facility for local potato and Gurez breed sheep, the KVK Gurez will form a FPO of progressive farmers and shall supply sheep and potato to army in Gurez which would enable farmers to sell their produce at desirable cost that would enable the to come to the high economic organization.
Prof Makhdoomi assured the the house that University shall assure training programs free of cost to rural youth to make them entrepreneurs.He further added that KVK will help army personnel in identifying medicinal and aromatic plants,promote buck wheat as functional food, fortify it with minerals and vitamins,packing and branding of Kalazera nisch crop of the region is on threat aa it is being harvested by locals at a stage of infancy that prevents it’s further dispersal and cultivation.KVK shall bring the region under protected cultivation and precision agriculture.
