DLSA G’bl holds awareness campaign on child marriage

Ganderbal: The District Legal Services Authority Ganderbal under the aegis of J&K Legal Services Authority organised Legal awareness programme/campaign on “Elimination of Child Marriage” on Wednesday in Ganderbal district.
Officials said that the l on the eve of “Azadi ka Amrit Mohatsav” and “Pan India Awareness & Outreach Campaign”. The campaign was held under the guidance of Secretary District Legal Services Authority Ganderbal Ms Tabasum.
The awareness campaign was conducted in coordination with CUK Tulamulla, as many as 30 Law students participated in the said awareness campaign accompanied by PLVs of District Ganderbal. They visited many villages of district Ganderbal.
During the awareness campaign PLVs and Law Students made General public aware about Child marriage prohibition and they elaborated that the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, prohibits solemnization of marriage of a boy who is less than 21 years of age and a girl who is less than 18 years of age respectively. The Law gives a right to a party who was a child at the time of his/her marriage to get the marriage declared as a nullity.
The person who performs conducts or abets child marriage can be punished with two years of rigorous imprisonment or with fine which may extend to one lakh rupees or with both. Any person who promotes or permits child marriage can also be punished with two years of rigorous imprisonment or with fine which may extend to one lakh rupees or with both.
However, no woman can be punished with imprisonment. Awareness was also given about the Ill-effects of Child marriage like Serious health hazards, HIV, Anaemia, gynecological problems. Pregnancy is a leading cause of death and disability among young women aged 15 to 19. Early Child marriage Stops the educational, social and economic growth of girls. Awareness was created in various areas of District Ganderbal.
