SRINAGAR: Directorate of Extension organized two days exposure visit for a group of 70 farm women from Ladakh UT belonging from Kargil and Zanskar. The theme of the training programme was “integrated farming system, approaches for income generation and sustainability”.
The programme was conducted under the directions of Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor SKUAT J&K Prof. J. P Sharma with a visionary approach to promote organic farming in the UT of Ladakh. Inaugurating the programme Director Extension SKUAST-K, Prof Dil Mohammad Makhdoomi explicitly elucidated the grass root constraints of the farming community of Ladakh.
He emphasized on organic farming and its various facts as a means of promotion of livelihood of the Hill agriculturists. Prof Makhdoomi briefed the participants about the technologies available with the university that will help to maintain the organic farming as the region is being declared organic by the Govt of India. By giving an organic status to a region means that no chemical fertilizer or other chemical related agricultural input will be allowed to the region which in other words highlights the importance of integrated organic farming for sustainability and economic upliftment.
Director Extension while highlighting the transforming face of agriculture in the cold arid regions of Ladakh stressed upon maintenance and promotion of its organic status. He impressed upon the fact that the technological interventions have made it possible to undertake agriculture under the most hostile climatic conditions. He highlighted the achievements of SKUAT-K in the fields of agriculture and allied sectors in the regions and advised all stake holders to work in a cohesive and collaborative mode for furthering the technology besides popularizing the proven technology. He advised the participating women to take advantage of their tour through first hand exposure with the agricultural technologies in practice at SKAUST-K and feel free for any queries.
