Webinar on recent advances in anticancer approaches of herbal medicine

SRINAGAR: Department of Zoology, Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University, Rajouri organised national webinar on “Recent Advances in Anticancer Approaches of Herbal Medicine”on August, 2021.Faculty members, Scientists, Research Scholars and students from various institutions across the country joined and actively participated in the event.
Prof. Akbar Masood, Vice-Chancellor, Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University appluded the department of Zoology for organising the webinar. Prof. Akbar said that Indian traditional codified medicinal systems and folk medicine are a vast lexicon of herbal formulations and medicinal plants. In the last few decades, the popularity of herbal medicine/products has increased worldwide, not only as part of conventional treatment strategies but also for health care management, and thus the opportunity to promote Indian traditional medicine is increasing globally, Prof. Akbar said. Prof. Akbar mentioned that a large number of modern medicines are derived from the plants used in Ayurveda and other traditional medicinal systems.
Prof. Iqbal Parwez, Dean School of Biosciences and Biotechnology congratulated the department for organising the event. He urged upon the faculty members to come up with cutting edge research for the greater benefits of the society.
Dr. Shashank Kumar, a renowned scientist from Department of Biochemistry,Central UniversityofPunjabwas the invited speaker of the event. Dr. Shashank’s research involves basic biology and anti cancer drug discovery. He presented an extensive talk on anti-cancer drug development and Notch Signaling Pathway. During his talk, Dr. Kumar elaborated the anti-cancer role of plant metabolites via notch signaling. Hebriefed the audience about the role of natural agents present in herbal plants for targeting Notch Signaling Pathway proteins, which in turn could enhance the efficiency of conventional cancer therapies.
Dr. Mohd Salim Reshi, Organizing Secretary of the webinar in his inaugural address highlighted a report of International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) Indian National Cancer Registry Programme (INCRP), 2020 regarding the increase of cancer cases in coming years. He stressed upon the Indian Traditional Medicinal System as a vital source for the development of effective and non toxic drug against cancer. He further added the export value of Ayurvedic and herbal products from India and gave a brief history of isolation of metabolites from plants as drugs for cancer treatment. He also talked about various natural products/ plant metabolites, which are currently available in the market for the treatment of this dreadly disease, Cancer.
ShahnazAnjam, Assistant Professor, Department of Zoology, gave a welcome note and Dr. Sajad H. Parey,Assistant Professor, Department of Zoologypresented a formal vote of thanks.
