Pattan locals stage protest, demand clean water supply

Baramulla: The people in the Hanjivera area of Pattan in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district staged a protest on Monday against the department of Jal Shakti who, according to them, failed to provide them with the portable drinking water.
Eyewitness said that large number of people mostly women and children of Hanjivera village of Pattan Baramulla took into the streets Monday morning and staged protest against the Jal Shakti department, protesters shouting slogans against the department alleged that despite several requests they fail to provide them portable drinking water and the residents are facing such a situation from many months. They said that the department is sourcing water from a nearby Nala which is completely dirty and unsafe for drinking and for other purposes.
The main pipeline is completely dry and the department starts to lift the water from a nearby stream which is so dirty as one can not wash clothes, the drinking is so far, we request the department so many times to restore their main pipeline but they are not paying attention” a women protester said.
She said that an official of the department told us to visit Zangam army camp for clean water.
The protesters also blocked the Srinagar Baramulla highway at Hanjivera for a long time due to which traffic movement was affected for some time. Later a team of Pattan police reached the spot and restored the traffic somehow. The police team also assures them that they will forward their demand to concerned officials so that they will solve their problem.
A senior official of the department said that they will collect the ground report from their employees and assure that they will resolve their problem very soon.
