SRINAGAR: An event on demonstration of technology for Rainbow trout seed production based on recirculatory aquaculture system was held at conference Hall Drass Kargil for the trout fish farmers of the District on 31-07-2021. The event was organized under the research project entitled “Development and field validation of low cost Rainbow trout hatchery technology for livelihood enhancement of Ladakhi population” funded by Department of Science and Technology, Government of India under the Scheme for young Scientists & Technologists to Dr Mohammad Iqbal Mir of Faculty of Fisheries. The programme was attended by Assistant Director Fisheries-Kargil, Line Department officials, BDC chairperson Kargil and PRI members. A large number of Rainbow trout fish farmers and young entrepreneurs of District Kargil also participated in the event.
Principal Investigator Dr Mohammad Iqbal Mir, demonstrated the various techniques of the rainbow trout seed production and its role in flourishing the Rainbow trout fish farming in the landlocked UT of the country. The farmers were apprised about the importance of the technique of seed production for aquaculture in general and trout fish farming in particular and its importance about the socio-economic upliftment of the people of the region and creating employment opportunities for the youth of the region. The Assistant Director Fisheries-Kargil in his address applauded the role of Faculty of Fisheries-SKUAST-K for taking the initiative of trout seed production in Kargil viz – a – viz fish production for the nutritional security of the people of region. The region is considered as one of the best places of India for the Rainbow trout fish culture due to its gushing streams, lakes and climatic conditions to support the large scale aquaculture related activities. He further said that the rainbow trout production will not only meet the requirement of the protein based food of the region but can also export the surplus production to the neighboring states if new technological interventions like to the present one can be put in to action.
Dr Mohammad Iqbal Mir thanked the competent Authority of the SKUAST-K University and Faculty of Fisheries, Rangil Ganberbal for providing him an opportunity and all logistic support to carry out the research work of the project and carry the various objectives of the project smoothly.
