SKUAST holds webinar on World Bee Day

Srinagar: Directorate of Extension/SAMETI conducted a one day webinar on the occasion of World Bee Day in conjunction with the KVKs of Kashmir and Ladakh region.
The theme of the webinar was “importance of Bee Keeping in increasing agricultural production and productivity with special reference to production and processing of honey”. Impetus was laid on the economic aspect of the enterprise and its importance in Human health.
Prof. Dil Mohammad Makhdoomi, Director Extension, SKUAST-K highlighted the potential of bee keeping in agriculture as an enterprise as well as its role in the sustainability of crop production systems. He stressed on promotion of beekeeping on modern lines vis-à-vis processing, packing and marketing. Prof. Makhdoomi specially endorsed the importance of honey and its by-products in the human health and role of apiculture in conservation of environment and biodiversity. He thanked the progressive farmers/beekeepers for their participation in the programme. He stressed on the need of Beekeeping to be developed as an Agri-enterprise and its role in entrepreneurship development.
Vice-Chancellor SKUAST-K, Prof. J.P. Sharma in his speech highlighted the importance of beekeeping in the present scenario of diminishing land holdings. In this era of entrepreneurship and agribusiness apiculture is a profitable enterprise for the landless farmers. He emphasized on the use of latest technologies for value addition of the honey and its by-products and encouraged farmers for venturing into novel by-products like bee-venom for catching the opportunities in national and international markets. Besides, he stressed standard labeling of the products through recognized agencies.
His address was followed by technical sessions wherein the experts in the area, deliberated upon the technicalities of taking apiculture as an enterprise.
