Elderly man dies after scuffle over ‘disputed’ land in Shopian

SHOPIAN: An elderly man apparently died due to cardiac arrest when a scuffle broke out over a dispute of land at Padderpora Village of district Shopian. The deceased was identified as Abdul Salam Thoker aged about 65.
Locals said that the incident took place after the revenue and other block level officials visited the village for demarcation and retrieving of land for a play ground.
They said that later a scuffle between some of the villagers and family of the deceased took place.
“They told my uncle to vacate the land or his car and the shed will razed to the ground. Even in the presence of officials he was dragged from his home by some local youth,” Bilal, nephew of the deceased said. He said that his uncle was 65. Family members also accused that the windowpanes of their houses were also broken by some of the villagers.
They said that family members shifted him to Kulgam hospital where he was declared dead on arrival. According to a health official body was later taken for medico legal formalities to district hospital Shopian and the details were awaited when this report was filed.
Family members also claimed that the said land is their own and a case in Shopian Court as well as sub district magistrate is going on.
Station House officer, police station Shopian couldn’t be reached for comments.
However, Medical Superintendent district hospital Shopian, Dr Ismail told Kashmir Reader that they have conducted post mortem of the deceased person. “We have sent samples and once the report of autopsy and forensic arrive we will disclose it,” he said.
Tehsildar Shopian didn’t respond to repeated calls from this reporter.
