18 years on, Baramulla Jetty Bridge awaits completion

BARAMULLA: Baramulla’s Jetty bridge is awaiting completion even after eighteen years of its construction.
The construction work on this bridge at Khawajabagh was initiated in 2002.
Locals said that the construction work of Jetty bridge is going on at snail’s pace, resulting in inconvenience to public of Kupwara, Handwara, Rafiabad and Baramulla, Khawaja Bagh areas.
A local trader in Baramulla said that the construction of the bridge was initiated in the year 2002, but the work was suspended frequently due to paucity of funds. He said the work of the bridge is going on under the supervision of J&K Projects Construction Corporation (JKPCC) which has failed to complete the bridge after spending a significant amount on incomplete construction.
The aim of the construction of this critical bridge was to divert the traffic movement from Kupwara, Handwara and Rafiabad towards Srinagar and other areas bypassing Baramulla market. It would have mostly routed the army convoy from Srinagar to Kupwara and Handwara areas that usually have to pass through Baramulla market which is the main cause of traffic jams in the area.
