GDC Baramulla organises Talk on ‘Mental Health Issues’

BARAMULLA: The Postgraduate Departments of Psychology and Computer Sciences in collaboration with NSS Wing of Government Degree College Baramulla today organised a talk on ‘Community mental health interventions with special reference to ongoing COVID-19 pandemic’.
The lecture was delivered by Dr. Abdul Majeed Ganai as part of weeklong celebrations held under International Mental Health Week-2020 themed ‘Mental Health for All: Greater Investment-Greater Access’ and celebrated from October 6 to 10, 2020.
Prof. Mohammad Maqbool Rather, Principal of the college tabled the achievements of the esteemed guest and enumerated his roles as teacher, researcher and medical professional.
Dr. Navshad Ahmad Wani, Head, P.G. Department of Psychology introduced the guest speaker and informed audiences about the upcoming events of the week.
Dr. Ganai started with the basics of mental health, subsequently flagged various mental health and allied issues, and suggested different coping strategies in the face of mental health challenges exponentially aggravated by COVID-19 pandemic.
He articulated that the human body is the best machine in the universe, with dual tendency– positive and negative. It is the human capacity to work wisely on positive aspects while navigating the negative ones.
Dr. Ganai opined that a person could enjoy the real inner peace when he/she comes to the rescue of their fellow human beings and lessens their sufferings– psychological or otherwise.
He also voiced the deficient professional and expert help as a matter of concern, specifically, during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and suggested an alternative in terms of community intervention.
He emphasised upon faith healing, as in today’s crisis where technology and manpower seems tiny as a development, faith played a great role in boosting immunity. A message of joining hands and working together were the concluding remarks of the lecture.
The lecture was followed by a threadbare discussion on the issue noted above and a lively question/answer session.
