Srinagar-Jammu highway reopens for traffic after two days

Banihal: The 270-km Jammu-Srinagar highway was reopened for traffic after remaining closed for two days due to a massive landslide in Ramban district, officials said on Saturday.
Debris due to the landslide on Friday blocked the only all-weather road linking Kashmir with rest of the country leaving thousands of vehicles, including trucks carrying essential supplies to the Valley, stranded.
“The highway was cleared of landslide debris late on Friday night after a hectic 33-hour-long clearance operation, paving the way for stranded vehicles to move towards their destinations,” a traffic department official said. He said one-way traffic was allowed from Srinagar towards Jammu this morning.
Traffic on the highway is progressing smoothly when last reports were received, the official said.
