SRINAGAR: Post eid, pollution levels have increased significantly in water bodies in Srinagar as people have dumped sheep skins, offal of sacrificial animals with residents now asking for clearing the mess.
At many places including Rainwari water channel, Nowpora channel, Nalla Amir Khan and Brari Nambal lagoon, the waste dumped clandestinely on the banks and floating in the water is visible everywhere.
Many residents living alongside the water bodies complained of bad odour emanating due to dumping of the animal waste amid hot summer.
“This bad smell is affecting our health. We approached the concerned authority to carry out sanitisation and remove the waste,” says Mohammad Furqan, a resident of Saida Kadal.
Vice chairman Lakes and Waterways Authority Tufail Matoo told Kashmir Reader that they have pressed men and machinery into service to remove the waste from around the water bodies.
He urged people not to throw garbage and other waste into lakes. “It is our collective responsibility to save the lakes,” he added.
