Srinagar: Three weeks after Junaid Mattu was toppled from the top post in a no-confidence vote, the Srinagar Municipal Corporation has scheduled the election for a new mayor on July 14.
A communique issued Wednesday by Secretary SMC said that nomination papers can be obtained from his office on July 9 and 10 and the same shall be submitted to the office by the candidate or his/her proposer by July 11.
It added that the notice for withdrawal by a candidate should be delivered to the office before the election takes place on July 14.
The notification issued by the Secretary SMC reads, “In terms of Section 36 of the J&K Municipal Corporation Act, 2000, read with Rule 6 of J&K Municipal Corporation (Procedure and Conduct of Business) Regulations, 2005, the Election of Mayor, Municipal Corporation Srinagar, will be conducted on as per the given notification.”
“Forms of nomination paper shall be obtained from the office of the Secretary, Srinagar Municipal Corporation, between 1100 hours and 1600 hours from 9th July 2020 to 10th July 2020,” if further reads.
“Nomination papers shall be delivered between 1100 hours in the morning and 1600 hours in the afternoon by a Candidate or his Proposer at the office of the Secretary, Srinagar Municipal Corporation, on any day not later than 11th of July 2020,” the order states.
“Notice of withdrawal of candidature shall be delivered by a candidate at any time before the election is proceeded with in the meeting. In the event of election being contested, the poll will take place on 14th of July 2020 from 1100 hours onwards,” it says.
The no-confidence motion that ousted Mattu was filed by Zakura corporator Waheed Dar. The motion received the support of 42 other corporators.
Dar, who leads an independent group of corporators at SMC, claimed that the new mayor will be elected with a full majority and he will get rid of corruption.
“There has been no civic development in the past two years. There have only been scams,” he said.
