Snow, rains expected in Kashmir Valley: MeT

Srinagar: Kashmir is expected to experience wet spell as an active western disturbance is most likely to hit Jammu and Kashmir as well as Ladakh from today, meteorological department (MeT) predicted on Tuesday.
Deputy Director MeT Srinagar centre Dr Mukthar Ahmad said that the heavy snowfall is expected in upper reaches of the Valley and plains are expected to receive moderate rains and snow from March 4 to 7.
The upper reaches including Gulmarg, Sonmarg, Kupwara and Barmulla will witness heavy rains and snowfall, he added.
According to him, the wet spell will last long till March 7.
The official said that it may lead to disruption of surface and air traffic as visibility could reduce.
The department in a statement said that light rain and snow would commence at a few places in Kashmir on the morning of March 5.
It added that that there is possibility of thunderstorm, hail and gusty winds at 30 to 40K.M.PH in the plains of Jammu and few places of Kashmir during the period.
Meanwhile, a Traffic Police official said that Srinagar-Jammu highway will be closed for vehicular traffic today. He said that road is being cleared after landslide occurred around Peedha and only stranded vehicles will be allowed to move towards Srinagar subject to clear weather after clearing the debris.
