LJHP bridge in Baramulla declared unsafe 12 yrs ago, authorities yet to demolish it

BARAMULLA: Over twelve years ago, LJHP Baraj bridge located at Gantamulla Colony Baramulla district was declared unsafe by engineers, but authorities are yet to take steps for its demolition and reconstruction. Over hundreds of vehicles including loaded trucks, passenger and private vehicles are crossing the river Jehlem through this bridge. Riyaz Ahmad, local said, “The Baraj bridge is most important bridge which connects dozens of villages with national highway built by the Lower Jehlem Hydro Electric Power Project (LJHP) and is completely unsafe for pedestrian and vehicles.but due to government negligence, passenger and other vehicles are still crossing the river through this bridge.” “We demand this bridge should be demolished and then reconstructed as soon as possible,” he said. Another local Abdul Majeed said, “LJHP officials closed the bridge for heavy vehicular traffic some two years ago and was about to be demolished. But later it was neglected and traffic was allowed to cross the river.” “This bridge is completely unsafe for traffic movement because the bridge has developed several cracks and it’s pil lars are damaged. A team of engineers declared it unsafe over twelve years ago,” said an engineer posted in LJHP projectwishing not to be named.
