Incarcerated Mian Qayoom suffering serious health issues, says family

Urges people to pray for veteran lawyer’s speedy recovery

SRINAGAR: Family of incarcerated Jammu and Kashmir High Court Bar Association President Mian Qayoom who is admitted at a hospital in Agra has requested people to pray for his quick recovery of his health.
Qayoom, the 76-year-old lawyer, was hospitalised at SN Medical College from his Agra Jail, on Wednesday when he developed chest pain. His family arrived in Uttar Pradesh on Thursday to meet him at the hospital.
“All tests done on Qayoom sahab has indicated serious problems including artery blockage of 60 percent, which is near fatal,” said Mian Muzaffar, nephew of Qayoom. “He requires angiography and possible open heart surgery at the earliest. His pulse rate had dropped to 44 rpm which is extremely risky. He is still experiencing spasm like pain in chest and was barely able to walk due to constant shortage of breath.”
The veteran lawyer is serving detention at an isolated ward of Agra jail under Public Safety Act since August 5 when Government of India scrapped the special status of Jammu and Kashmir.
His family had appraised a court many times about the deteriorating health of Qayoom, and demanded him to be shifted to Srinagar. Surviving on a single kidney and suffering from double vessel disease, Qayoom was suggested to go for open heart disease last year. But, Muzaffar said, due to uncontrolled diabetes, it was differed till his blood sugar levelled.
“All are requested to pray for his recovery,” he added.
