3 Hizb militants killed in Shopian gunfight

Shopian Three Hizbul Mujahideen militants including a former policeman were killed in southern Kashmir’s Shopian on Monday.
An official said that on special inputs about the presence of militants, a cordon and search operation by joint team of government forces including 55 Rashtriya Rifles (RR), Special operation group of police and Central reserve police force (CRPF) in Wacchi village.
During searches, a fire fight ensued which resulted in the killing of the trio. The slain were identified as Adil Bashir of Zainpora, a former SPO who decamped with seven service rifles of policemen and a pistol from former PDP legislator’s official residence in Srinagar, Waseem Ahmad Wani of Vurpora in Shopian and Jahangir Ahmad Malik, of Achan village in Pulwama.
The Monday’s encounter was the first since abrogation of special status to Jammu and Kashmir in August in Shopian.
“They both were partners in crime. Their killing would end a reign of terror that was prevalent in Shopan. They had killed civilians who have been identified as Gowhar Dar, Nadeem Manzoor, Ilyas Khan and zahid khan,” Director General of Police Dilbagh Singh told reporters here.
According to him, the encounter took place in the follow up of investigations into the case of arrested Dysp Davinder Singh, and most wanted militant Naveed Babu, who too was a police deserter. Singh said post the arrests, which was one of the successful operations in 2020, a number of hideouts were busted.
Waseem Wani, according to police was the district commander of Shopian. He, according to police, had “a history of terror crime records since 2017. He was involved in carrying out several terror attacks, besides several civilian atrocities in the area”.
Several cases were registered against him including killing of civilians in Shopian, police added.
Adil joined militancy after he took away seven AK-47 Rifles and a pistol from former MLA Wachi’s Srinagar residence on September 28, 2018.
