Srinagar-Jammu highway cleared for traffic

Srinagar: The Srinagar-Jammu highway was cleared for traffic on Monday after four days, giving respite to hundreds of travelers.
Superintendent of Traffic Police (Rural) Muzaffar Shah acknowledged that the highway was thrown open for traffic.
Besides stranded vehicles, light motor vehicles from Srinagar were also allowed to ply towards Jammu, he said.
Hundreds of vehicles were left stranded on the highway since December 13 after snow and rains trigged landslides at several places on the strategic road. The treacherous mountainous highway is the main surface link connecting Kashmir to outside world.
According to the traffic police officer, vehicles will be allowed to ply on the highway from one-way. He said that Light Motor Vehicles will be allowed to proceed from Srinagar towards Jammu will ply today subject to good road condition.
Shah said that the decision about allowing heavy motor vehicles from Srinagar will be taken after assessing condition of the highway.
Meanwhile, the meteorological department (MeT) predicted that weather will remain dry till December 19.
Director MeT Sonam Lotus said that light rains might occur after December 19 but they are still monitoring the weather system.
