HC grants government a week to decide about consumer forum

Srinagar: The JK High court on Thursday granted a final opportunity to Jammu and Kashmir government to notify Jammu and Kashmir Consumers Redressal Forum and districts forums.
The court gave a week to the respondents to take decision on the reconstitution of these bodies and file a conformity report by December 18. It directed that in case the report is not filed, the Secretary Food and Civil Supplies departments and Secretary Law and Justice and Parliamentary Affairs shall appear in person on the next date of hearing.
Earlier the court had directed the Chief Secretaries of J&K and Ladakh to take immediate steps for providing the commission and district forums for the two newly constituted UTs.
The court had observed that it is necessary to dispose of the pending complaints and appeals pending with the previously existing forums.
Earlier on November 19, the government had issued an order stating they had taken up the matter with Law department for seeking advice regarding issuance of necessary notifications in respect of constitution of JK UT Consumer Redressal Commission and District Consumer Fourum under the Consumer protection Act 2019.
The government had sought time for finalisation of matter, with court granting a week’s time.
Hundreds of cases are pending with the consumer forum but the downsizing of the state into Union Territory has resulted in winding up of the forum. This has caused uncertainty about the cases pending before the body as the civil supplies department shifted the records.
