HC gives 2 weeks on setting up consumer panel

Srinagar: The J&K High Court granted two weeks to chief secretaries of the two Union Territories of J&K and Ladakh to finalize the re-constitution of Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission and District Consumer Forums under Consumer Protection Act, 2019.
“We grant further two weeks time to the respondents to finalize the matter as regards the re-constitution of Jammu and Kashmir UT Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission and District Consumer Forums under Consumer Protection Act, 2019,” the court said.
It passed the direction after senior additional advocate General, Javed Iqbal pointed out that Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs department has taken up the matter with the department of Law, Justice & Parliamentary Affairs for seeking their advice on re-constitution of the commission.
He said that some considerable time is required for finalization of the matter.
On November 13, the court had directed the chief secretaries of the Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh to inform the court about the steps taken for providing the Commissions and District Forums within a week.
The court will again hear the matter on December 11.
About 10,000 cases are pending in the consumer courts leaving their fate in dilemma after the commission was wound up following downsizing the state into union territory on October 30.
