New MV Act: Help create awareness; Traffic dept to parents

SRINAGAR: As the new Motor Vehicle Act has come into force from September 1, traffic department hasasked parents to help in creating awareness and inform their children about the new traffic rules to avoid penalties.
Officials said that parents play an important role in creating awareness about the traffic rules. They said as per the new law, fines have been increased so that people will follow the traffic rules.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) traffic Srinagar, Tahir Gilani told Kashmir Reader that in new MV Act, government has raised the amount of traffic violations.
“Currently, department is creating awareness drives, informing people through print, electronic media and circulating pamphlets,” he said.
Gilani addedthat parents play an important role in creating awareness about new traffic rules.
He said there are strict rules for stunt bikers and minor driving. “If a minor will be found driving a vehicle, his parents will be first penalised 20,000-25,000 rupees and minor will also be barred from getting license until 25 years of age,” Gilani said.
The MV Acthas come into force from September 1, and as per the act, there will be heavy penalties for violating the traffic rules.
According to new amendments in the MV Act, 63 clauses of the Act has been amended. Driving by minor will be fined 25,000 rupees, without helmet Rs 1000, using mobile phone while driving Rs 5,000, without seat belt 1000, drinking during driving Rs 10,0000, and wrong parking Rs 2000.
For triple riding Rs 500 will be imposed, failure to give passage to emergency vehicles, a fine of Rs10,000 will be imposed, for dangerous driving, Rs5,000 will be imposed and stunt driving by a two-wheeler,Rs50,000 fine will be imposed and playing of music system,Rs10,000 will be imposed.
A senior official at the department said due to prevailing situation in the valley, they have relaxed these acts as people are not fully aware about these acts.
“On major traffic violations, we are penalizing the violators and they are being penalized according to new MV act,” an official said.
He addedthat there are clear directions that all officers will have to wear body worn cameras while on duty and there will be heavy deterrence against traffic violators as per the MV act to lower the graph of accidents in JK.
