Public works remain affected due to low internet speed at SMC

SRINAGAR: Amid the internet connectivity at Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC), public works remain affected due to low internet speed.
Officials at Central Citizen Facilitation (CFC) at SMC said that public works have been affected due to internet blackout since August 5 in Kashmir. “Although the government has restored internet, the speed is low causing inconvenience in processing the cases,” he said.
An official wishing anonymity said that due to the low speed, they are not able to provide building permissions – which results in illegal constructions.
“Hundreds of files are pending in the office as we are not able process the cases. Around 90% of cases are processed on internet and only 10% work is done manually,” he said.
The low internet speed has also affected the revenue section of SMC, which collects revenue for the corporation.
“We are not able to work with low speed internet. From transactions to printing bills, we are dependent on internet,” said an employee working at Revenue section of the SMC.
He said that each month, 200-210 cases come to their section, but they can process only three to five cases in a day.
Similarly, no tender has been issued by the SMC since August 5. Officials said that most of the contracts are advertised in the form of e-tenders.
A group of employees said except sanitation department, all other departments have been affected due to the internet blackout.
Some employees at the SMC said that they just come to mark their attendance and do no work due to internet blackout.
Corporation’s birth and death section has also been affected. “On an average, this section was receiving around 220-230 birth and deaths certificates, and around same number of them were issued or dispatched. But due to the low internet speed, it has been affected,” said an employee.
Commissioner SMC, Khursheed Ahmad Sanai told Kashmir Reader that due to low internet speed, it takes us more time to complete one task.
“But what else can we do? We are dependent till the internet is fully restored in the valley,” he said.
