Srinagar reports highest casualties in road accidents

679 people killed across J&K this year

SRINAGAR: Traffic accidents have killed 679 people across Jammu and Kashmir this year with the winter capital Jammu witnessing highest casualties.
In Jammu where 877 road accidents were reported so far from January to August, according to data from the office of J&K traffic police department, 84 people lost their lives. Besides, 891 people were injured.
In Kashmir, Srinagar tops the list among the 10 Valley districts accounting for 32 deaths. Also, 229 people were also wounded in the accidents, the official data said.
After Srinagar, Baramulla reported highest casualties. The data shows 21 people were killed and 324 injured in 219 road mishaps.
Likewise, it said, 18 people were killed and 146 injured in 87 accidents in central Kashmir district of Ganderbal.
Similarly, south Kashmir’s Pulwama and Anantnag witnessed 17 deaths each in road mishaps. In Anantnag, 132 accidents occurred in which 264 persons were injured. Likewise, in Pulwama 40 traffic accidents were reported and 109 people were injured.
In Budgam, 10 people lost their lives in 89 traffic accidents and also 113 people were injured.
In Kulgam, 8 people were killed in 90 accidents. Bandipora reported five deaths and 36 traffic accident, it said.
In Handwara 46 traffic accidents have been reported in which 10 people were killed and 59 were injured.
However, Kupwara reported lowest number of deaths and Shopian fared lowest in accidents. The north and south Kashmir districts witnessed 2 deaths and 17 accidents, respectively.
