As LoC heats up, residents demand safety bunkers

Kupwara: Two days after a civilian and two army soldiers were killed in cross-border shelling along the Line of Control, residents of Uri and Tangdar are demanding construction of bunkers for their safety.
Even as an eerie calm prevailed since Sunday’s shelling, residents from the affected villages including Churanda, Tillawadi, Saidpora, Mothal, Sillikot, Balkot, Hathlanga in the Uri and Karnah told Kashmir Reader that were living under fear with the army movement on ground and helicopter drills intensifying thereafter.
While the government had set up bunkers for locals along the LoC in Jammu region, locals alleged, the administration had failed to replicate it in Kashmir even as winter was approaching, locals alleged.
“Although, we had built some bunkers a few years ago, but they too were destroyed in the subsequent shelling over the years,” a local resident said.
The residents complained that apart from the government’s claims of shifting people to safer places and a survey of a few dozen damaged residential houses, there had been no safety measures in place for people in Keran, Karnah and Gurez, where shelling takes place “every other day”.
They said that scores of residents in Keran and Tangdar sectors had been forced to vacate their houses since the heating up of borders.
With their houses damaged in the cross border firing, the locals said they had nowhere to go in the approaching winters.
A local resident told Kashmir Reader that several dozen residential houses in the Keran and Tangdar sectors had been damaged in the recent shelling.
“Maximum residents from the affected villages have shifted to their relatives’ places in the safer areas,” he said.
Many locals, he said, were compelled to stay behind for their livestock, which is the major source of income for them.
An official in the local administration said they had “hardly any role what is going on as it (army shelling) is in the domain of the GoI”.
