Srinagar: Police will not allow any protests, in any form, including sit-ins in Kashmir Valley till the situation improves, the
NDTV has reported.
“No protests of any form, including sit-ins, will be allowed in Kashmir till the situation improves and the restrictions in the
Kashmir Valley are completely lifted,” Director General of Police, Dilbagh Singh told the television channel, as per the report.
The police said that their efforts would be to stabilize peace further before any such activity is allowed. “Absolutely no
protests will be allowed. Maybe when the situation further improves, we will see. But not as of now,” he said.
Singh said that few days back some women were arrested for holding a sit-in against the revocation of special status to Jammu
and Kashmir on August 5 by Government of India.
He said that some placards carried by women protesters were “not very good” and that they “certainly had law and order
implications”.
The protest was carried by dozens of women, including sister and daughter of former J&K chief minister Farooq Abdullah, social
activists and academicians.
They were detained by the police at Press Enclave Srinagar, and lodged in Srinagar’s Central Jail for one night before they were
released against personal bonds.
The women protest was perhaps the first of its kind after abrogation of Article 370 in Kashmir, as government placed
unprecedented restrictions amid a communications lockdown and clampdown on political and civil society leaders.
The police Chief was quoted as saying that provocations do not come only through words which you speak.
“Provocation comes from the placards which you carry,” he said.
He said that restrictions imposed by authorities should be respected.
