Police version on situation in South Kashmir

Srinagar: Police Sunday issued a statement on the raging encounters in South Kashmir.

A statement issued here by the police said that on specific input regarding presence of militants  forces launched a cordon and search operation  in Peth  Dialgam area in  the jurisdiction of Police station Anantnag.

As the search started and  the location of militants was zeroed in, the security forces made repeated requests on loud speaker asking them to surrender, as per the SOP, the spokesman added.

On this one of the militants (name withheld) came out of the house and surrendered before the forces. He has been taken into custody, it added.

It is pertinent to mention that the family of the militant who surrendered at the encounter site also helped the police in motivating him to come out of the house and surrender.

The other  did not do so and instead resorted to firing on the forces which was retaliated and in which he was killed.

He was  identified as Rouf Khanday .

Rouf had gone missing early this year and his gun yielding photograph had come on social media in last week of March, the statement added.

The body of Rouf has been handed over to the family for last rites.

Both of them were part of outlawed organisation Hizbul Mujahideen, the police said.

Meanwhile, necessary legal proceedings have been stated into the matter.
