Gunmen target SPO’s in south Kashmir

 

Srinagar: Suspected militants on Saturday targeted two special police officers (SPO’s) in south Kashmir’s Pulwama and Anantnag district leaving one SPO dead while as another suffered critical injuries.

Police said that gunmen fired upon Mohammad Ashraf near Muran Chowk at around 4:25 PM in the afternoon.

The incident left Ashraf, a resident of Mouchpona injured and he was immediately shifted to the nearby district hospital where he succumbed to injuries, police said.

Sources said that Ashraf, a former militant was working as an SPO in Cargo, which houses the Headquarter of the special operation group of the police in Srinagar. Ashraf was presently residing at Chanapora in Srinagar.

Meanwhile, a police spokesman said that the slain cop was working as an SPO and was currently off duty.

“Due to the multiple fire arm injuries official succumbed to his injuries,” the spokesman added.

Earlier, a policeman was shot at and injured by militants in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district in the morning.

A cop on traffic duty at Khanabal area of Anantnag was fired upon by unidentified militants, leaving him injured, the police spokesman said. He said the injured cop has been rushed to a hospital.

The cop was identified as Trilok Singh.
