UPDATED: SPO shot dead by militants in Pulwama

Pulwama: A special police officer (SPO) was killed after fired upon by suspected militants near Muran Chowk area of south Kashmir’s Pulwama district on Saturday.

Official sources told a local news gathering agency that the gunmen fired upon Mohammad Ashraf near Muran Chowk at around 4:25 pm.

In the incident, Ashraf, a resident of Mouchpona village suffered serious bullet wounds and was shifted to the nearby hospital, where he succumbed to injuries

The agency, while quoting sources said that Ashraf, was a former militant who was working “as an SPO in Cargo, Srinagar and at present was residing at Chanapora in Srinagar.”

SSP Pulwama Mohammad Aslam Choudary confirmed the incident.

“Ashraf was fired upon by the suspected militants near Muran Chowk. He was working as an SPO in Srinagar,” SSP said.

Meanwhile, reports said that the Army, Special Operation Group of Police and CRPF have cordoned off the area (GNS)
