Police seeks reservations, concessions in private schools

Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir police has identified 10 reputed private schools in Kashmir division for seeking reservation in admissions and concession in fee for kids of police cops working in the state.

As per documents available with ‘Kashmir Vision’ police is seeking 30 percent concession in fee and 20 reservations of seats in these schools for the wards of police personnel so that they can avail ‘better and quality’ education.

As per the official documents, the police have asked the concerned superintendents of police in Jammu, Samba and Kuthua districts to hold deliberations with the school heads identified in the district and submit the report to the concerned Deputy Inspector General (DIGs) of Police.

Also, the police have enlisted 10 schools from Kashmir including Burn hall, Presentation Convent School, Green Valley educational Institute, Tyndale Biscoe, Mallinson Girls higher secondary school, Salfia Muslim School, Woodlands House School, DPS Athwajan, Iqra International and New Era Public School.

“After detailed deliberation with the school heads a report/outcome may please be furnished to this office by or before March 25 for further appraisal to higher ups,” reads the letter shot to Superintendents of Police of various districts.

As already reported, the J&K police department has constituted a committee at Jammu headquarters with an aim to reach out to ‘reputed private schools’ for providing reservation in the classes and concession in fee to the wards of police personnel.

“In lieu of this, police shall offer to provide necessary training and practices to the children in such schools on important national and school level functions being celebrated during the year,” reads a letter shot to private school association by deputy superintendent of Police Anantnag.

Importantly, police has already held deliberations with the heads of private schools in south Kashmir wherein schools heads refused to provide any reservation in admissions.

Meanwhile, the private schools have opposed the police proposal seeking reservation and concession in admission saying that it was direct interference in the functioning of the private schools.

President Private School Association Kashmir (PSAK) G N Var said their schools are already under financial crunch and they can’t afford any concessions.

“Police has its own welfare fund and also its own school- (Police Public School) where they can enroll their kids and provide them better education,” Var said, adding that it was a direct attack on the autonomy of Schools.

He said private schools also can’t discriminate between police and civil. “Child is a child and we have nothing to do whether his/her parents are working in the police department or a civil office or place,” he said.

Var said private schools can’t provide any reservation unless a law is passed in the legislative Assembly or any order comes out from government.

“Today it is Police and tomorrow CRPF will approach and may be BSF or any other force will also seek admission in private schools. This reservation on basis of profession is unheard of. We can’t provide relaxation on basis of profession,” G N Var said.

“It is direct interference of police in private education sector and attack on autonomy of schools. Police has its welfare fund and also its own school,” he added.
