Peer Mohalla Batagund residents protest against halting work

Anantnag: Inhabitants of Peer Mohalla Batagund Verinag staged protest against the Block Development Office (BDO) Verinag for ‘stopping the work on the road unnecessarily’.

Locals told ‘Kashmir Vision’ the authorities had started work on  600 mtr long MGNREGA road in 2017 from Peer Mohalla Batagund to Water Tank under Authority No MGNREGA/17/18/071-007 Dated 23/10/2017, costing Rs 3 Lac.

The locals said that authorities cut all the trees of poor residents but stopped the project for unknown reasons, saying that the contractor refused to pursue the work without any proper reasons.

They alleged that as the job card holders are only allowed to work under MGNREGA schemes but the authorities and the officials are allowing the unregistered workers to work on the projects.

“The amount of Rs 55311 has been released so far in favour of these fake job holders without proper supervision of the department,” they said.

Firdoos Ahmad Peer, a local said that “we visited BDO office Verinag many times to raise this issue with the officials but they ignored our demands every time.”

Programme Officer MGNREGA Block Verinag, M. Ubaid Dar said that the work was stopped due to the dispute between the two brothers. ‘We will start the work again once the dispute will be resolved,” he said.

He also said that the payment was released in faviour of the job card holders only.

However, he didn’t explain whether those working under MGNREGA work are job holders or not.
