Woman injured as cross-border shelling rages in Uri sector

Srinagar: A woman was injured after Indo-Pak armies exchanged gunfire on Monday at Uri sector of Baramulla district in north Kashmir.

Official sources said Pakistani troops targeted Indian posts of 17 Jaat regiment along LoC at Pika Post in Uri at 15:30 hours.

“The fire was retaliated and continued intermittently till late in the evening”, they said.

During the clash, a woman identified as Zulekha Begum wife of Jamal-Din- Khatana resident of Charunda is said to have sustained injuries and has been hospitalized.

Meanwhile, Army’s Srinagar based defence spokesperson Col Rajesh Kalia confirmed the incident.

“Unprovoked ceasefire violation initiated by Pakistan posts in Uri sector at 17:15 hours. Own troops retaliating appropriately, unconfirmed reports indicate causality on Pak troops”, the spokesperson said.

He said that Pak posts now targeting civilian population in Churanda village near Line of Control.

When reports last came in, the intermittent exchange of cross-border firing was going on. (With inputs from GNS)
