Cops thrash a local driver, a journalist in Srinagar

SRINAGAR: Police on Sunday thrashed a local driver and a journalist in Maisuma locality here in Srinagar city.

According to reports the journalist who was performing his professional duty his cell phone was snatched by policemen and was roughed up and abused.

Witnesses said that a local driver from Maisuma area of Srinagar city was on way towards his home from Jammu when he was stopped by police near Taj Hotel and beaten to pulp without any reason.

The driver confronted the police saying that he is a local from Maisuma but policemen didn’t listen to him and thrashed him.

Eyewitness said some people tried to save the Driver but they were pushed away by the cops.

As the policemen were busy in thrashing the local driver, an accredited Journalist Beig Shamim Ahmed tried to shot a video on his cell phone, but the policemen lost their temper and snatched his phone saying that journalists are responsible for the messy situation in Kashmir.

“They not only abused me but pushed me back. It seemed they were drunk who had no respect for law,” Beig said and added when he contacted SSP Srinagar, he felt sorry and said that he will probe the matter.

Eyewitness told that Suddenly SHO Maisuma Sajad Assad reached the spot and sought out the issue and apologies for the cops action against local Driver.

A police official when contacted said that they will take action against the cops. He said that they are requesting the said journalist to take his mobile back.

“Meanwhile Working Journalists Association has condemned the attack on Fourth pillar of Democracy and blamed “the violence that the state has wreaked on us” as “largely responsible for this kind of brutalisation”. They added that this is an unfortunate incident and there is hardly any difference between humanity and barbarity.”

Journalists Association has appealed Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti and DGP Dr SP Vaid for strict action against the goon type cops. (PTK)
