Gunmen loot JK Bank branch in Zakir Moosa’s village

Pulwama: Gunmen suspected to be militants on Monday made an abortive bid to loot yet another branch of the Jammu and Kashmir Bank in South Kashmir’s Noorpur Tral area. However, police said that the gunmen were chased by the locals after they tried to take away cash from the bank.

Sources said that three masked gunmen on Monday afternoon entered into JK Bank branch Noorpora and looted ninety seven thousand eight hundred fifty six rupees there besides damaging equipment, including computers. The bank branch falls in Noorpura village which happens to be the native place of Ghazwatul Hind’s commander, Zakir Moosa.

Eyewitnesses said that the gunmen also fired in air before they fled from the spot.

Station house officer Awantipora Nazir Ahmed said that it is not yet clear how much cash militants managed to take away.

He added that a case has been registered and further investigation is going on

SSP Awantipora Mohammad Zahid Malik said that Zakir and his two associates are involved in the robbery and they fired several gunshots before decamping with cash from the JK bank branch Noorpora.

He added that manhunt has been launched in the area to nab the militants.

Witnesses, however said that the locals who were present near the Noorpora branch of J&K Bank pushed back the militants by hurling stones on them. The militants retreated from the bank while firing few aerial gunshots.

Importantly, cash transactions at about 45 branches of Pulwama and Shopian districts were stopped in May this year after gunmen targeted many branches of the J&K Bank besides other banks.
