Injured inmate treated in Sopore hospital

Sopore: Additional Sessions Judge Sopore on Tuesday directed the police to admit Ahtesham Ahmad (25), son of Farooq Ahmad, resident of Batpora Sopore to a local hospital for getting his injuries treated.

Ahtesham is one of the 18 victims of alleged police assault on the night of November 21 in Delhi’s Tihar jail. He was produced before the court in north Kashmir’s Sopore in Baramulla in an old case involving slain Hizb-ul-Mujahideen commander Qayoom Najar.

In his mid twenties, Ahtesham was brought to Srinagar on Monday from where he was driven to Sopore Tuesday morning.

A witness of the court proceedings in the court of sessions judge Sopore said that the judge directed police to get Ahtesham treated at the hospital as ‘marks of injuries were visible on his body’.

He was taken to sub-district hospital Sopore where he is being given treatment, he said.

Reportedly, a unit of Tamil Nadu Special Police (TSP), a committee constituted by Delhi High Court has found, has allegedly beaten as many as 18 jail inmates of Tihar jail, among whom most are Kashmiri prisoners including son of Syed Salahuddin named Shahid Yousuf.

Yesterday, the Delhi High Court directed Tihar jail authorities to get all the victims specially treated at AIIMS Delhi.

The court will listen to the proceedings of the case after three weeks following another report by a newly constituted committee which is led by a district and sessions judge.
