Fire man who risked life to save the shrine

Srinagar: Ghulam Hassan Wani, in-charge of the fire services post in the premises of Kashmir’s revered shrine, Khanqah-e-Moula risked his life and saved the shrine as well as its property from huge damage.

People were seen wailing outside the shrine when Wani went upstairs to douse the fire that damaged the minaret completely.

Wani risked his life and went nearer to the minaret and put effort to douse the fire. “He is the man who has saved the rest of the building from the flames,” locals said.

It was around 01:15am when Wani went upstairs to douse the fire, saying that despite several hardships including the pump shed didn’t work he managed to venture closer to the minaret to perform his duty.

“I didn’t care about my life while I was dousing the fire,” he said, while talking to ‘Kashmir Vision’.

“The pump shed at the beginning didn’t work. It took 15 minutes to carry the pipes and other needful things nearer to the minaret to douse the fire,” he said.

“Nobody except him dared to take the first step to douse the flames,” a local sitting next to him said, adding that he is the man who has saved the shrine.

The locals as well as his colleagues assumed that Wani was dead as he did not come down till 07:00am this morning. ‘Everybody assumed that the F&ES official died in the fire as he went upstairs at 01:00 am and didn’t come down for 7 hours,” they said.

Wani informed that he has sustained minor injuries in the fire incident. “But I am fine,” he said.
