Kulgam: A soldier and a militant were killed in an ongoing gun battle on Tuesday in South Kashmir’s Kulgam district, police sources said. They said that the militant killed in Kulgam gunfight was associated with Hizbul Mujahiden (HM).
According to the sources on the ground, last fire was responded around noon as forces are involved in the combing operations around the area. Sources said that the forces are in possession of a dead body apparently that of a militant killed in the encounter.
The sources added that a soldier was killed while as another one was injured in the fighting. The injured soldier was shifted to a hospital.
The gun battle erupted after security forces cordoned off the village in Qazigund area following information about the presence of the militants.
Army spokesperson Col R K Pandey confirmed that an army soldier and a militant have been killed in the ongoing gun-battle at Kund-Qazigund in Kulgam district. The operation is going on, he added.
The militant killed in a gunfight with government forces in Nowbug Kund village of Devsar in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district belonged to Hizb ul Mujahideen, police said.
An official identified the slain as Muzamil Ahmad of Badroo Yaripora in Kulgam district.
The slain militant, he said, was a B. Tech pass-out and was associated with Hizb.
“He was active for past over three-and-a-half years,” said the official.
Meanwhile, another gunfight broke out also on Tuesday between militants and security forces in Pulwama district, police said.
In Pulwama’s Laam village near Tral town, militants fired at security forces including the Rashtriya Rifles, the Special Operations Group of the police and the Central Reserve Police Force as they laid the cordon of the area.
According to the reports, the militants had managed to slip away from the encounter site. However, a senior police official said a militant hideout has been unearthed while the search operations in the area were called off after nearly 20 hours.
