Srinagar: Kashmir University is once again in news, albeit for wrong reasons. This time the varsity has been nailed for serving unhygienic and expired food to hostel boarders.

The revelation came to fore after a team from food safety and drug organization visited Bibi Aamina hostel of the varsity and found hostel conditions in a sorry state of affairs.

The team, sources said has found that the girl students were served expired and unhygienic food taking a toll on their health conditions.

An official from Food safety and drug organization confirmed the development and said they have taken up the samples for testing and will come up with a final report.

“The Department will prosecute the authorities as per law. The team has seen the conditions of the hostel mess which is totally unhygienic,” the official said.

The hostel boarders said they took up the matter with University officials number of times during the past months but there was no improvement in the quality of food served to the hostel boarders.

“Nobody from varsity administration paid any heed to our grievances and we had no option than to put it in notice of food safety organization,” the students said.

The students said the Bibi Aamina hostel has been outsourced to a private company.

“The functioning of this hostel has been outsourced by the University administration to an outsider Muhammad Akram that is why boarders face inconveniences here,” they said.

“Unlike our hostel, the mess and other facilities of other hostels are regularly monitored by the university authorities,” the students said.

They said boarders of other hostels get their grievances resolved by approaching concerned warden or provost “But in our case, officials pass the buck saying that our hostel has been outsourced to a private company.”

The officials in Kashmir University however feigned ignorance about the issue and said they were not issued any communication by the food safety Department.
