Srinagar: The Joint Resistance Leadership’s call for the strike has evoked a mixed response from the locals, mainly in the capital city of the state.

Traffic was running smoothly in most parts of the city and most of the business establishments were open in the city. However, authorities had put restrictions in the old city areas of Srinagar.

Notably, all the shops and business establishments in the city centre of Lal Chowk remained closed, however, traffic was running smoothly in uptown parts of the city. In other markets adjacent to Lal Chowk, even shops were doing routine business, witnesses said.

However, according to the reports from North Kashmir, most of the business establishments were closed and traffic was plying thin on major routes of the area.

Reports said that a complete shutdown was observed in Sopore town of North Kashmir. All the shops and business establishments were closed and traffic was off from the roads. In Baramulla, most of the shops were closed and only few private vehicles were plying on the road.

A huge deployment of CRPF troops and JKP personnel was witnessed in many areas of the town. Notably, no stone pelting incident or protests were reported from the area.

Meanwhile, reports from south Kashmir said that a complete shutdown was observed in most parts followed by the call given by Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL).

All the districts including Kulgam, Anantnag and Shopian witnessed shutdown.

Reports said that all the business establishments including shops and educational institutes remain closed. Traffic movement in many part of south Kashmir was thin and vehicles were rarely seen on the roads.

Meanwhile, according to a police official, no untoward incident was reported in South throughout the day. He said that the situation remained under control throughout the day.

The resistance leaders, Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik had called shutdown to observe October 27 as a “black day”.

Calling it as “black day and the day of mourning” for the Kashmiris, JRL comprising Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Mohammad Yasin Malik called for complete shutdown today.

“71 years back India without any constitutional and moral justifications forcibly occupied the state of Jammu and Kashmir on the same day and since then Indian forces are mercilessly killing innocent and unarmed Kashmiris, vandalizing their properties and are involved in sexual assault on women,” said the JRL.
