Boy rescued after labeled as ‘braid chopper’

Srinagar: Timely action by some right thinking person’s saved a boy from being lynched by a frenzied mob in Ahmed Nagar area on the outskirts of Srinagar City on Sunday.

A police spokesman said that police Station Soura received a call from a person who identified himself as Sheikh Mohammed Ashraf of Hamza Colony Ahmed Nager Soura informed that young unknown boy was roaming in the area of Hamza Colony whom people suspected of being a braid chopper.

The caller said that as people assembled in large numbers some right thinking people came to the rescue of the innocent looking boy and stopped people from inflicting any harm on him.

Police said that since the people were agitated, they were hell bent on taking on the boy, however, the locals resisted their move and kept the boy in the safe custody of a house and informed the police about the development.

“The police team headed by the SHO Soura rushed to the spot and took the suspected boy in custody and during preliminary enquiry the boy revealed his name as Tariq Ahmed Sheroo son of Mohammed Yousf Sheroo resident of Kapran Verinag Anantnag,” the spokesman said.

He said that after thorough investigation in the matter it came to fore that the said boy along with other boys are working as a labourers with a painter identified as Nasir Ahmed Wani son of Abdul Aziz Wani of Dooru Zamalgam Anantnag.

“The boy during evening hours when he was heading towards his rented accommodation, was suspected as braid chopper by some local boys of Hamza Colony and within no time a huge gathering assembled and caught hold of the suspected boy. The senior members of the colony however, without letting anybody to harm the boy kept him safe till the arrival of the Police and handed him over to them,” the spokesman added.

He said that police meanwhile, got in touch with the legal heirs.
