Eight civilians injured in firing along LoC

Srinagar: Eight civilians were injured after the armies of India and Pakistan exchanged fire along the Line of Control (LoC) in Rajouri and Poonch districts of Jammu and division on Wednesday, defence sources said.

Sources said that massive firing started around 6:30 am with mortar shells fired from across the border landing in villages located close to the LoC in Balakote and Mendhar areas of Poonch and Manjakote area of Rajouri district.

“Today morning Pakistan violated ceasefire by resorting to firing at Dabbi, Nijot and Basoni posts in Balakote Sector Mendhar. Army is retaliating,” J&K Police tweeted to confirm the news.

Police said that four civilians were injured in Poonch district along the LoC and the same number of civilians were injured in Rajouri district.

“One injured is a minor. All of them are out of danger after they were provided first aid. Our teams are there to help people,” SSP Rajouri Yougal Manhas said.

Meanwhile, the authorities have closed all the educational institutes along the LoC in both the districts to prevent any causality.

Earlier, four civilians, including children, were injured after Pakistan on October 14 initiated indiscriminate firing in Bhimber Gali Sector along the Line of Control (LoC).

The ceasefire violations, which amounted to 228 in 2016, have reached 503 this year (till October 5).
