Former Sarpanch, Hizb militant killed in Shopian

Suspected militants on Monday shot dead a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) activist and a former Sarpanch in Imamsahab area of South Kashmir’s Shopian district while a Hizb militant was also killed in the subsequent scuffle.

Sources said the suspected militants shot dead a PDP activist identified as Mohammad Ramzan Sheikh (50) outside his residence at Huomhuna village of Imamsahab area this evening.

Sheikh was rushed to Zainapora hospital where doctors declared him brought dead.

Following the killing, the family of Sheikh had a scuffle with the militants during which a Hizb militant identified as Showkat Falahi of Trenz Shopian was also killed.

Sources said that Falahi was killed after his rifle went off during the scuffle.

Director General of Police (DGP) S P Vaid said that three militants fired and killed ex-panch PDP in Shopian.

“In scuffle, one militant was also killed,” Vaid tweeted.
