Doctor’s transfer triggers protest in Sopore

The premise of Sub-District Hospital (SDH) today witnessed protests wherein people sought revocation of transfer order of a Paediatrician, Dr Suhail Nayak who was posted in the hospital and has been transferred following some news reports against him.
A group of people holding banners demanded that Dr Suhail be allowed to continue in SDH Sopore as they termed him a ‘competent and sincere’ doctor who was serving the people of North Kashmir districts of Baramulla, Kupwara and Bandipora as a Paediatric specialist in the hospital.
Protesters who had gathered in the hospital compound shouted slogans in favour of Dr Suhail and through the banners demanded that he be not transferred and SDH Sopore be upgraded.
A report from a news agency had claimed that the ‘unauthorized absence’ of the said doctor from the hospital had put the lives of newborns in SDH Sopore at risk.
While the doctor himself has refuted the allegations and stated that he was not absent and that he has explained his position to the top officials of the health department.
“Sub-district Hospital Sopore is the solitary hospital that caters to child and maternity cases for three districts Baramulla, Kupwara and Bandipora. The transfer of the only Paediatrician in the hospital will affect many people,” said a protester.
“It is not for the first time that a specialist and dedicated doctor is being transferred from SDH Sopore for no reason” said Tariq Ahmad, another protester.
“Government deliberately transfers good doctors from here. Many a times the specialist doctors are transferred under political pressure because politicians want these doctors to be posted in their respective political constituencies,” he alleged.
Meanwhile, Block Medical Officer (BMO), Sopore Dr. Sami denied that the doctor has been transferred.
“The government has not transferred the Paediatrician as no formal orders have reached my office,” he told Kashmir Vision.
Dr. Sami said that some people had organised a protest after believing a rumour that Dr. Suhail has been transferred.
