Protest in GDC premises after police tries to hoist Tri colour

Clashes erupted on Wednesday at Boys Degree College Khanabal in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district after police hoisted a tricolour during a sports event in the college campus.

Reports said that the hoisting of tricolour infuriated the students who objected the move. However, the police officials could not cool the tempers and soon the situation turned ugly, triggering clashes between students and police in the college campus.   An eye witness said that the protesting students set ablaze a tent and also pelted police with stones.

Police also fired several tear-gas canisters to disperse the protesting students.

Reports said the Police had scheduled to hold Sports festival in the college however, the students after entering their campuses opposed hoisting of the tri color.

“The inauguration Ceremony of the Police Sports Festival was being held today at the premises of the Government Degree College, Anantnag but the students resorted to protests and forced authorities to cancel the event,” eyewitness said.

Witnesses said as the students reached the campus they saw  banners and hoarding of police inside college triggering resentment among them.

“Situation turned volatile after a group of college students appeared near the Stage after an Indian Flag was about to be hoisted,” witnesses said.

Eyewitnesses said soon after Police tried to hoist Indian flag, Students  shouting  pro azadi and anti Police slogans.

“Aghast with the move  students vandalised the banners and burnt down the tents, tables and chairs  placed for inaugural ceremony of the tournament, eyewitnesses added.

They said Police fired some teargas shells to disperse student protesting inside the college premises after students staged protests and started pelting police with stones.

However no student was injured or arrested during the incident.

Sources said that Principal of the college asked police officers to leave the college premises otherwise situation can become critical.

“After police left the ground, the class work in college was suspended and students were asked to go their homes around 12:30 pm,” they said.

Protests forced authorities to cancel inaugural ceremony of sports festival that was scheduled to be inaugurated by DIG SOUTH at 3:30 PM.

Meanwhile, College Teachers Association (CTA) on Wednesday condemned the entry of Police personnel inside the premises of Government Degree College Kahnbal Anantnag.

In a handout issued here, presidents CTA Tariq Ashai said that college staff and administration are the authoritative people to handle the situation within the campus.

“Students treat us as parents and accept our directions all the time. But once police enters the campus they (students) get provoked and law and order problem is created in the premises.

“We are requesting Police to refrain from trespassing in educational institutions in present times as it can snowball into major law and order situation,” Ashai said.

He said the college teachers won’t play any role in maintaining peace inside campuses if   government didn’t intervene and barred Police from entering into educational institutions.

“Authorities should change the venue of the sports event given the sensitivity of the area or should close down the college till the event is culminated,” Ashai said.
